The Internet Service Providers of Sri Lanka

Since Lanka Internet Services Ltd, began commercial operations, back in 1995 the industry has grown expotentialy. With 10 ISPs now competing for the traffic, rates that were once as high as Rs 20.00 per minute have come down as low as Rs 1.00 per minute.
A new connection which used to cost upto 10,000 rupees can now be obtained even free of charge.
The telephone companies have at last started to provide faster and more reliable services; unfortunately at a higher price. How ever the industry has been helped by the removal of the 25% Turnover tax and the imposition of the 12.5% GST in it's place.

Licensed ISPs

Lanka Internet Services Ltd (LISL)
The pioneer in commercial internet services. They are still the biggest of the Sri Lanka ISPs, but suffer from heavy congestion

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT)
Owned by The Sri Lanka Telecom. This website is often inaccessible. But they do have a high bandwith.

ITMIN
A recent entrant. They frequently send unsolicited direct mail advertisements to their customers. Proposes to introduce a new billing model in July.

Eureka
Introduced a new tarrif structure on the 28th May But they now offer unlimited access only during off peak hours. more on the changes..
But their web site remains a maze of frames

Pan Lanka
Perhaps the fastest and the least congested service. And the prices are very competitive. But they can learn a thing or two about marketing.

One of the more recent entrants into the market. Couldn't locate their tarrif structure on their awful looking website

Started operations shortly after LISL. From the start their prices have been very uncompetitive

Other Service Providers

These companies provide internet connections, even though they are not licensed ISPs. Many work in collaboration with SLT, often as resellers.
Lanka Global Online (LGO)
works in collaboration with Sri Lanka Telecom

Visual Internet
Their site is easier to navigate than most of the others. works in collaboration with Sri Lanka Telecom. They offer the lowest rates for unlimited access.1

All I learned from the ISP Lanka site was that they have a designer who knows a bit of Javascripts. They operate the cafe@inter.net cyber cafe.
